Finally, someone has successfully combined trucks with drones for us. In a partnership between Ford and drone maker DJI, this drone delivery system was developed as part of the Ford Smart Mobility initiative, which studies ways to improve mobility, autonomous vehicle technology, customer experience, data, and analytics.
Using Ford SYNC and OpenXC software platforms the system is able to achieve drone-to-vehicle connectivity. The system can be deployed from from the rear of any F-150 truck.
Potential uses for the drone system include emergency response or commercial uses in agriculture, forestry, construction, bridge inspection or other surveying work. This system could also be used by first responders in the United Nations Development Program to inspect emergency zones caused by an earthquake or tsunami.
